The unnamed man, believed to be in his 50s or 60, reportedly ignored a sign warning people not to swim in the area.

A clip filmed by an onlooker shows the crocodile approaching the man as he tries to swim towards the shore.

All of a sudden, the three-metre long reptile attacks the man and brings him underwater.

The crocodile makes a single splash of its tail before vanishing beneath the surface with its victim.

'THE BEAST'

Screams can be heard as soon as the crocodile grabs the man and the person filming the scene says in shock: "Oh, the beast."

According to some witnesses, the man undressed and went swimming, reports the Mexican national newspaper Milenio.

After just a few seconds, he was attacked by the crocodile which ripped off a limb and took his life in minutes, according to local media.

Local emergency services such as the Red Cross, Civil Protection and firefighters went to the scene of the incident and entered the lagoon with boats to try to rescue the victim, 20Minutos reports.

The victim had neck, arm and chest injuries when his body was rescued, according to El Heraldo de Mexico.

He was pronounced dead when rescuers brought his body ashore.

The man has not been identified but it is believed he was a homeless man living in the region.

Swimming and any other aquatic activities are banned in the lagoon due to the presence of crocodiles.

It comes after a crocodile bit the arm off a tourist as he took a wee in another Mexican lagoon.

The man, believed to be an American tourist, was relieving himself in the Nichupte Lagoon in Cancun, a tourist hotspot in the south-eastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

As he urinated in the Nichupte lagoon the deadly reptile swam out of the water and bit his forearm off at the elbow.

After a struggle with the beast the man managed to escape and run away.
